Applying for Housing Choice (Section 8) Vouchers
Section 8 recently accepted applications for a two week period ending June 7, 2011. The random lottery drawing has now been conducted and the top 2,500 applications have been selected and placed on a waiting list. Letters and e-mail notification were sent out beginning August 2, 2011 notifying all applicants of the results.
Eligibility
To qualify for a Housing Choice Voucher, your household income must be at or below 80 percent of the area median income (adjusted for family size). Your household also must meet other eligibility requirements, including, but not limited to:
- You qualify as a family, elderly person, or person with disabilities. If you are a single adult younger than 62 or are currently subsidized, you will not be eligible.
- You qualify as a citizen or non-citizen with eligible immigration status
- You do not owe rent or other amounts to the Housing Authority or another public housing authority
- You do not currently participate in most other subsidized housing programs
- No one in your family has a record of criminal activity that would be judged by the Housing Authority to have an adverse effect on the health, safety, or welfare of other property residents or Housing Authority employees
- You meet one of our housing selection preferences (homeless, rent burden, substandard housing)
Applicants are selected through a lottery process. Once we've determined that you are eligible for a voucher and your lottery number comes up, we will support you in achieving a successful search for a place to live.
KCHA does not provide emergency housing. However, you may be able to find emergency housing assistance by consulting our list of agencies and organizations devoted to affordable housing.
