Reasonable accommodations

KCHA provides reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities, as required by fair housing and disability laws. A reasonable accommodation is a change to a rule, service, program, or process that gives a person with a disability an equal opportunity to use and enjoy their housing.

To qualify, you or a member of your household must be a person with a disability. You must show a clear connection between the disability and the accommodation being requested. KCHA reviews each request individually. KCHA does not have to approve a request that would create an undue financial or administrative burden or fundamentally change a KCHA program.

Some common requests are listed below as examples.

Examples for Subsidized Housing

  • Service or support animal
  • Unit modification (examples: lowered counters, grab bars, roll-in showers, etc.)
  • Live-in aide
  • Transfer to another unit

You do not need to make a reasonable accommodation request for grab bars, bathtub cuts, toilet modifications, portable AC units, bidet, showerhead change, door hardwood change, visual alarms, and one additional key card. If you require these items, contact your KCHA Property Manager directly.

Examples for the Housing Choice Voucher Program

  • Live-in aide
  • Voucher extension
  • Inspection extension
  • An additional bedroom

KCHA can consider policy and procedural accommodations related to the HCV program. However, your landlord is responsible for deciding whether to make changes at the property, and KCHA cannot require a landlord to make those changes.

How to Request an Accommodation

You can make a request by phone, email, at a KCHA office, or in any other way that works for you. You do not have to use a form, but a form may help KCHA process your request more quickly. A family member, service provider, or advocate may also make a request for you.

Information You May Need to Provide

KCHA may ask for supporting information showing that you or your household member has a disability and that the accommodation you requested is connected to the disability. KCHA will not ask for medical records. The information you need to provide will depend on your situation.

How KCHA Reviews Your Request

KCHA reviews each request based on the person’s needs and circumstances. An accommodation must be medically necessary as it relates to the disability. Approval of a specific accommodation is not guaranteed. To learn more or submit a request, contact your management office, email RAs@KCHA.org, or call 206-926-4616. If you need TTY relay service, call 7-1-1.

Check the Status of Your Request

To check the status of a request or leave a message for the Reasonable Accommodations team, email RAs@KCHA.org or call 206-926-4616 and leave a voicemail. We will try to respond within two business days.

Transfers

If KCHA has approved a reasonable accommodation transfer, contact your property manager for more information. The Reasonable Accommodations team does not manage transfers, and transfer wait times cannot be guaranteed.

If Your Request Is Denied

If your request is denied, you may submit more information from a third-party provider who knows about your disability. Some denials may also be reviewed through KCHA’s grievance process. Visit KCHA’s grievance information page to learn more.

Supportive Services

KCHA cannot provide counseling, medical care, or social services beyond the services available to all residents.

People with the same disability may need different accommodations. KCHA will work with you to understand your needs and identify appropriate accommodation.
